Digital Underwater Photographer
Specialty
(a 2 dive specialty)
Counts toward the
Master Scuba Diver
Certification
What do you need to start? A desire to learn
how to use an underwater digital camera. You
can be a snorkeler or a scuba Diver. There
is no minimum age for a snorkeler. Supplied Air
Snorkelers (SAS) must be at least 5 years old.
Scuba divers must be at least 10 years old.
Why take the Underwater Photography Specialty?
The Digital Underwater Photographer
Specialty course
helps students develop the knowledge, sills and practical
techniques necessary to obtain excellent photographs
with a digital camera. This course is primarily
for those interested in learning the basics of digital
underwater photography.
What you will do: ****Read the Digital Underwater
Photography Specialty manual and complete Knowledge
Reviews Parts I and II. Learn about
the planning, organization, procedures,
techniques, problems and hazards of underwater-photography
diving; photographic principles, composition,
film types, flash/available light photography and camera-handling
techniques; and the preparation, care and maintenance
of photographic equipment. You will get to use your new knowledge
during the 2 dives done under the supervision of an
instructor.

Materials Needed: Underwater Photography
Manual (included in course price). Recommended:
DVD ($27.20)
Cost - $125 includes manual, use of an
underwater camera for the class, picture for certification card,
certification card and 2 dives under instructor supervision.
Recommended: video/dvd, add $23.96 for video/dvd.
If you have done an underwater photography dive
in connection with your Adventure Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver
certification, provide us with a copy of the Adventure Log book page
signed by your instructor evidencing that you have turned in the
knowledge review and completed the dive. We will subtract
$25 from the cost of the specialty.

Independent Study: Need one classroom prior to making dives. Read
the entire Digital Underwater Photography Specialty Manual and complete the
Knowledge Reviews Parts I and II. Recommended: Watch
the entire DVD. You will need to turn in the knowledge
reviews prior to certification.
Class Dates: Dives can be done on any lake weekend or any trip.

Information about the Dives:
Dive One:

Prepare and assemble an underwater camera system

If appropriate, set the shutter speed and aperture for an exposure
based on manual meter readings, general film exposure information or
automatic programming information

Focus the camera by varying subject-to-camera distance or focus
know setting

Frame and expose a complete roll of film, if appropriate, taking
underwater still-life pictures
-
Bracket the exposure of each type of photo taken underwater by
varying either shutter speeds or f/stops (if appropriate)
-
Compose each still life applying basic considerations such as
flash angle, camera angle, subject position, image completeness,
foreground, background and complementary colors.
Dive Two:

Prepare and assemble an underwater camera system
