Project AWARE - Fish Identification Course (a 2 dive specialty done at a blue water dive destination such as Cozumel, Bahamas, Belize, Cayman, etc.)

Counts toward the Master Scuba Diver Certification

What do you need to start:  Must be at least 10 years old and certified as a Junior Open Water Diver, an Open Water Diver or have an equivalent rating from another certifying agency.

Price: $75 -  Price includes two dives under our supervision (done at a blue water dive destination such as Cozumel), the certification card, picture for certification card and 2 dives under instructor supervision.

How to Get Started: Call us at 214-505-0713 or Click here to email us

Materials Needed:  The Adventures in Diving Manual ($35.42 + tax).  Recommended:   the Reef Fish in-a-Pocket Book ($12.00).

Independent Study:   You will need to read the chapter about Aware-Fish Identification located in the Adventures in Diving Manual and complete and the knowledge review located at the end of the chapter. You will need to turn in the knowledge review prior to certification.   If you have done a Fish Identification dive in connection with your Adventure Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver Certification, provide us with a copy of the Adventure Log book signed by your instructor.  You can count that as Dive One of the Specialty.  We will subtract $25 from the course price.

Why take the Fish Identification Specialty?  This course will introduce you to the most common fish families and species found in temperate and tropical waters. You'll also learn basic fish identification and scientific survey techniques as well as how important personal involvement is in aquatic conservation.  How many times have you asked what was that fish I saw?  After you take the Fish Identification specialty, you will learn how to look up the fish by shape or family type.

What you will do:  Read the chapter on Aware Fish Identification in the Adventures in Diving Manual and complete the knowledge review located at the end of the chapter.  You will learn about the Project AWARE philosophy about protecting worldwide aquatic ecosystems, fish family groupings and common characteristics of fish species found in the local area, fish surveying techniques and strategies for collecting valid data and the planning, organization, and procedures for identifying fish families and species while diving.  You will be introduced to the following fish groups:  Oval shape fished such as Butterflyfish, Angel fish and Surgeon fish; Silvery Fish such as Jacks; Grunts and Snappers; Small oval fish such as Damselfish and Chromis; Groupers; Parrot Fish and Wrasses; Squirrel fishes; Blennies; Odd shaped fish that frequent the bottom like the Peacock Founder or Scorpion fish; Odd shaped fish that swim around the reef like Triggerfish and Filefish; Eels and Sharks and rays.  You will get to use your new knowledge on the 2 dives done under instructor supervision.  Click here for information about dives. You can attend an option classroom seminar (upon request).
